The English Football League ( EFL ) have confirmed that the five substitutions rule has been scrapped for the forthcoming 2021-22 campaign.
The rule, allowing clubs to make five changes per game as opposed to the usual three, was brought in upon football's restart in June 2020 following the Covid-enforced break.
It was thought that it was beneficial due to the sheer number of games being condensed into a short period, therefore allowing more wiggle room.
It allowed managers to make as many as five changes in three intervals during the match, although it has to be said that it was a rarity that all five alterations were used within a game.
Now, with clubs enjoying a longer rest period between seasons, the EFL have confirmed the ending of the temporary rule change.
From next season, in the Championship, League One and League Two, teams will be able to name seven substitutes but only use a maximum of three.
There will also be concussion changes granted, if required in games.

The rules also apply to the Carabao Cup and Papa John's Trophy. In the event of extra-time in cup competitions or play-offs, an extra sub will be permitted for both sides.
The decision is being made despite the International Football Association Board (IFAB) opting to extend the five subs rule until the end of the 2021-22 campaign.
The option to use five subs from a bench of nine players was dropped by the Premier League for the 2020-21 season whilst the EFL went back to three at the start of the campaign only to re-introduce five subs in November.
