EFL confirms decision on Accrington vs Bristol Rovers game after eight positive COVID tests

Saturday's League One fixture between Bristol Rovers and Accrington Stanley has been postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests.

Ben Garner's Gas were due to travel to the Wham Stadium, but eight members of John Coleman's squad have tested positive for coronavirus.

A member of staff has also tested positive, and they and the players infected are self-isolating.

An EFL spokesman said: "This weekend’s Sky Bet League One fixture between Accrington Stanley and Bristol Rovers has been suspended and will not take place on Saturday as scheduled.

"Due to the number of positive cases of COVID-19 within the Accrington Stanley squad and the requirement for players (and staff) to subsequently self-isolate as per EFL and Government guidance, the Club has advised the EFL it is unable to safely fulfil this weekend’s fixture.

"The circumstances surrounding the postponement will now be the subject of investigation in accordance with EFL Regulations.

"A revised date for the rearranged fixture will be confirmed in due course."

The game was plunged into doubt on Thursday afternoon when Stanley announced an undisclosed number of players had tested positive for the virus.

It becomes the second League One game to be postponed this season due to the virus after positive tests in the Crewe Alexandra squad saw their game with Oxford United on October 3 called off less than an hour before kick-off.
