EFL confirm six positive coronavirus tests in Championship with season restart just 10 days away

Six individuals across four Championship clubs have tested positive for coronavirus ahead of the 2019-20 season restart, the EFL confirmed on Wednesday.

The six positives came from 1,192 tests of players and staff from all 24 Championship clubs across Sunday (June 7), Monday (June 8) and Tuesday (June 9).

Among those positive tests is Stoke City manager Michael O'Neill, who is now self-isolating after a proposed friendly against Manchester United at Carrington was cancelled before kick-off on Tuesday.

The Championship campaign is scheduled to resume in just 10 days' time on June 20.

An EFL statement read: "Following the latest round of COVID-19 testing, the EFL can confirm that 1192 players and Club staff from the 24 Championship Clubs were tested over the course of Sunday 7 June, Monday 8 June and Tuesday 9 June, with six individuals testing positive from four Clubs.

"Those players or Club staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate in line with the guidelines provided by the EFL and only those who have tested negative will be permitted to enter training ground facilities."

Meanwhile, two positive results from one club also came from 137 total tests conducted across the four play-off teams in League One, with Portsmouth later confirming two of their players had tested positive and would now self-isolate in accordance with EFL guidelines.

"Portsmouth Football Club can confirm that two players have tested positive for Covid-19," a club statement read.

"Neither were showing any symptoms and will now self-isolate in accordance with EFL guidelines.

"The club will respect medical confidentiality and not name the players concerned or make any further comment on this matter."

There were no positive results recorded in League Two after 135 players and staff were tested across the four play-off teams.

In the Premier League, one positive test was reported on Wednesday following the latest round of coronavirus testing after a total of 1,213 players and staff were tested across Monday and Tuesday.
