EFL confirm Leasing.com Trophy Final postponed amid coronavirus outbreak

Salford City's clash with Portsmouth in the Leasing.com Trophy Final at Wembley next month has been postponed due to the severity of the coronavirus outbreak, the EFL have announced.

After getting the better of fellow League Two club Newport County in the semi-finals, winning 6-5 on penalties at Rodney Parade, the Ammies' big day out has now been postponed following the outbreak of COVID-19 across the UK.

Issuing a statement to confirm that the highly-anticipated clash has been postponed, the EFL said: "The EFL Board has agreed that the Leasing.com Trophy Final, scheduled to take place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 5 April, should be postponed given the escalating situation in respect of COVID-19.

"This is appropriate given the scale and significance of the event to the football calendar, new sponsor Leasing.com, the EFL, both Clubs involved and their supporters.

"Over 50,000 tickets have been sold for the showpiece final, and the EFL does not want to be in a position whereby many thousands of supporters are forced to change their plans at late notice, so the decision has been taken in the best interest of all parties.

"All ticket holders will be notified of the new date as soon as possible."

Had the final gone ahead as scheduled, it would have been Salford's second visit to Wembley in less than a year, as they clinched promotion to the Football League via last season's National League Play-Off Final, seeing off AFC Fylde 3-0.
