Derby County are appealing against the 12-point deduction handed down to them after entering administration.
The Rams were hit with the handicap last month after entering administration. It was the latest in a long line of off-field episodes at Pride Park.
The club have been locked in a legal wrangle with the EFL over a breach of accounting policies and financial rules. Wayne Rooney's side are currently bottom of the Championship. They have two points, but without the deduction they would be in 14th place.
An EFL statement today said: "The Administrators at Derby County have lodged an appeal against the 12-point deduction imposed on the Club’s 2021/22 season total on 22 September 2021.
"As a consequence, this matter has been referred to an independent Arbitration panel who will consider representations from both parties before making a determination.
"At this current time the Club’s points total in the Championship table will remain unchanged."
In the aftermath of the administration news, Rooney revealed he learned of the developments through TV.
Derby chiefs did not contact Rooney or his players to inform them they were going into administration, with the squad discovering their fate via Sky Sports.
Asked how he learned the news, Rams manager Rooney told Sky Sports: "I seen it on Sky."
The news of the appeal comes after a weekend in which ex-Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has been heavily linked with a purchase of the troubled Rams.
Sources close to Ashley, who completed his sale of the Magpies after 14 strenuous years at the helm last week, have revealed to Mirror Football that he has an interest in buying Derby.
Ashley’s Sports Direct headquarters are just 30 miles from Pride Park in Shirebrook.
Derby’s administrators have already received interest from would-be buyers and are confident of reaching an agreement. Should the appeal be successful and the deduction reduced or wiped out, it would likely increase the interest in potential buyers.
Derby's next game after the international break is away at Preston North End on October 16.
