EFL clubs reportedly set to vote on curtailing the 2019/20 season as Leeds United await decision

League One and League Two clubs will vote next week on whether to finish the 2019/20 season.

The financial crisis in football has hit the EFL hard, in particular, in the bottom two tiers.

Whilst the Premier League are still in talks over 'project restart' and there is still hope for the Championship, the fate of the League One and League Two seasons look bleak.

EFL chairman Rick Parry warned on Tuesday that there would be a £200million black hole to fill by September, as clubs continue to lose money during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Whilst playing behind closed doors is an option in the Premier League, below that level it is impossible, due to the disparity in TV revenue.

As a result, clubs would be operating at a loss if they played without fans, due to their dependency on matchday revenue.

The Telegraph report that the issue of curtailing the season will be formally raised by the EFL at a conference call meeting on Thursday, May 14, with clubs informed of the intention to put it to a vote.

There is still sufficient belief that the Championship can play out its remaining nine fixtures and, therefore, they will not be involved in the voting process.

The report also states that it is understood as few as three League One clubs want to complete the rest of this season with threats of potential legal action from some clubs if they are forced to play amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

If the season ends prematurely, it is understood that the vote needs a 75 per cent majority to be carried and will raise the delicate issue of how the EFL intend to settle promotion and relegation which is still expected to go ahead in all the divisions.
