EFL clubs fear Leeds United and Championship rivals could break away if 2019/20 season is curtailed

League One and League Two clubs are reportedly fearful the Championship will break away to form a Premier League 2 if they curtail their season.

The second-tier has seen a vast amount of money poured into it as a direct result of clubs dropping from the Premier League.

Equally, 15 Championship clubs signed a letter to the EFL board last season threatening to go their own way during a row over the new broadcasting contract, led by Derby County owner Mel Morris.

With the Championship set to complete the 2019/20 season in full, alongside the Premier League, League One and League Two fear a further distancing if they curtail their campaign.

Clubs in the fourth tier have already voted to end the campaign prematurely, whilst League One clubs are split over the decision.

It's expected that the Championship, though, will round-up the season by playing out the final 108 fixtures.

Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani has previously spoken of his desire to create Premier League 2, a concept supported by other leading clubs in the Championship.

The Daily Mail report some clubs are privately discussing the prospect of a Championship breakaway, which could escalate if the third and fourth-tiers do not resume, although any formal split would require endorsement by the FA and the Premier League.

EFL clubs will vote next week on whether to curtail the season, with a majority of 51 per cent required to pass a decision either way.
