EFL club chief reveals worrying vote detail for Nottingham Forest, Leeds United and others

Portsmouth chief executive Mark Catlin has claimed some EFL clubs are calling for relegation to be scrapped.

All 71 of the EFL's clubs will take part in a vote on Monday on how to complete the current campaign.

The Championship is set to restart on June 20 while reports suggest League One is likely to follow League Two in being curtailed with only the playoffs being played.

Clubs will vote on those decisions as well as framework for what should happen in the event the season is curtailed at each level with unweighted points-per-goal favoured by the EFL and reportedly its clubs, too.

Relegation is also said to be on the agenda and according to Pompey chief Catlin, some EFL clubs want it scrapped.

Of course, on the face of it, that's no concern to Nottingham Forest, who are at the other end of the table, chasing promotion via the playoffs, or indeed the likes of Leeds United and West Brom in the top two.

But reports suggest that if relegation is scrapped in the EFL, the Premier League could use it as a precedent to do the same, subsequently blocking promotion from the division below.

“We received all the papers late afternoon, early evening last night [Wednesday], so it’s full-steam ahead for a decision on Tuesday," Catlin told talkSPORT.

“As much as possible they’ve let the clubs try to work it out themselves. That transpired it wasn’t going to happen so the EFL has had to step in.

“All I’ll say it’s been a very difficult thing and there are clubs calling for no relegation.”

Should the Premier League wish to scrap relegation it must have approval from the FA, who reserve the right to block significant changes to competition rules.
