EFL chiefs pushing for new Championship rule that would affect Leeds United

Championship bosses are 'determined' to introduce a wage cap.

The EFL met with clubs earlier today to discuss plans to return to action with reports a target date of June 6 has been pencilled in.

One of the other items on the agenda is a salary cap as clubs attempt to cope with the financial challenges caused by the coronavirus delay.

Clubs across the league face financial difficulty with talk of fans being kept out until early next year.

According to Mirror Online, EFL bosses are hoping Championship clubs will agree on a salary cap of between £15m and £20m.

Under those plans, teams over that cap - likely those who are relegated from the Premier League - will only be able to sign players on contracts worth £10,000-per-week or less, which is around the average wage in the second tier.

The current top earner in the Championship earns around £68,000 per week, according to a recent study , with the average highest earner at each club earning £29,000 across those who were in the division during the 2018/19 season.

Leeds United are reportedly very much towards the top of the highest wage bill list, but they could avoid any potential salary cap with promotion, currently top of the league and seven points clear of third place.

Discussions are set to continue over the coming weeks with League One and League Two clubs set to vote on plans for their season this Friday.

Reports suggest those divisions could be cancelled with playoffs still taking place after a points-per-game method is used to determine final positions.
