EFL chief not ruling out radical new idea that would have major impact on Nottingham Forest

Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor has raised the idea of shorter matches when players eventually return to action.

Nottingham Forest's season is currently suspended until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It is hoped that the campaign can be completed at some point, though there are numerous issues to be resolved first.

Premier League clubs underlined their commitment to restarting the 2019-20 season on Friday, but said "it was agreed that the PFA, LMA, players and managers are key to this process and will be further consulted".

Welfare and wellbeing of individuals returning to work is key and Taylor will pore over the plans as the Premier League looks to resume in mid-June.

"They're not stupid," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. "They will put safety first.

"There is a protocol being put together that is going to be presented, involving all medical experts and Government medical experts.

"There will be a meeting of the shareholders of the Premier League on Friday and then shortly after that the document of returning to work should be finalised and then in the following week, next week, as early as possible, that will be put to players and coaches.

"Then the practicality of all those issues and it will be looked at club by club."

EFL chairman Rick Parry has not ruled out the possibility of Taylor's proposal being implemented in the Championship, League One and League Two.

"There haven't been any discussions about it that I'm aware of," said Parry.

"There have been discussions with the FA and with FIFA about increasing the number of substitutes allowed to five.

"Clearly, I guess the aim could only be to reduce the strain on the players who would be coming back after a fairly long period away.

"I don't think we should be ruling out any creative ideas at the moment, given all the challenges we face."

Forest are currently fifth in the Championship table - in a play-off spot - with nine matches of the regular season remaining.
