English Football League chairman Rick Parry says the schedule will be shutdown in the near future if scientific advice suggests it would be beneficial to do so amid concerns over the Omicron coronavirus variant.
A significant number of Premier League and EFL matches have been postponed of late due to Covid-19 outbreaks within squads.
Cardiff City were unable to host Derby County due to a number of positive cases within both squads while a spread of the virus at Queens Park Rangers meant Swansea City were unable to make the trip to The Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.
Further matches are expected to be called off over the course of the festive period as clubs continue to get to grips with the escalating situation.
As a result of the concerns, the EFL this week introduced stricter measures for clubs to follow in a bid to restrict the spread of coronavirus while they also clarified the requirements needed for teams to fulfil fixtures.
And just a week before Christmas, EFL chief Parry admitted they are awaiting further guidance from scientists before making a call on whether or not to temporarily halt the fixture list.
"We've discussed it, we wondered if whether a short and sharp circuit break this weekend would help, but frankly it wouldn't. There's no science to suggest it would help," he said on Football Focus.
"If you look at the geographical spread, there are areas where games clearly can go ahead and where they can't.
"There's talk on the news this morning of government having another lockdown post-Christmas, so maybe that will be taken out of our hands.
"But we're getting more information, listening to the scientists today, they need more data to try and work out where we're going with this new strain.
"It's too early to tell, frankly. Next week we might be in a different position. If we think a circuit break will help, then we'll do it.
"But at the moment, there's no scientific evidence to suggest that, at this moment in time, it will help.
"Predicting the future is almost possible. We've got to stick together, stay calm and keep on making balanced decisions on the basis of the very latest information available."
Newport County are in League Two action at Rochdale today while Wrexham host Gloucester City in the FA Trophy.
Swansea are due to return to action against Millwall at The Den on Boxing Day while Cardiff are scheduled to host Coventry City on the same day.
