Hamlets in the central Kentucky bluegrass area were rural communities developed by Black people from the 1800’s to the 1920’s. Fayette County was once home to some 20 Hamlets. Plans call for raising funds for the restoration of the Cadentown Rosenwald School.
Lexington Council members last week heard about efforts to increase attention to these Hamlets. Brenna Pye has served on the steering committee.
“We want to provide opportunities to get involved by contributing artifacts and sharing oral histories from the community residents,” said Pye.
Also, Council Member Kathy Plomin said part of the project could include visiting with residents with ties to Hamlets.
“We’re talking about bringing in the different families that inhabited those Hamlets and it could be like a social occasion we would do maybe once a month,” said Plomin
There are also plans to seek the involvement of current African American pastors who lead churches in rural Fayette County.
