Effective transfers and kicking on - Pundit outlines why Marcelo Bielsa should be manager of the season

Leeds United have enjoyed a superb season so far - they are now just waiting to hear if they will be allowed to finish the job.

The Whites are top of the Championship table after 37 matches.

Marcelo Bielsa's side have played some outstanding football at times this season.

Before the coronavirus outbreak led to an indefinite suspension of all matches, it looked odds-on that the club would be ending their long exile from English football's top table.

Which therefore makes it a surprise to see that Bielsa received just one nomination when broadcaster Sky Sports asked half-a-dozen of its Championship pundits to select their manager of the year.

Sabri Lamouchi and Slaven Bilic, bosses at Leeds' promotion rivals Nottingham Forest and West Brom, understandably got the nod from some pundits, but only one earmarked Bielsa.

Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Keith Andrews, a regular co-commentator and studio pundit on EFL games, was the sole person to choose the Leeds chief.

Andrews said: "I'm going to go for Marcelo Bielsa for a number of reasons.

"The first is how Leeds have dealt with the disappointment of last season and the way they have dealt with that capitulation.

"I have been in the position as a player, and it's so difficult to get over.

"He did very little in the transfer market but it has been extremely effective.

"Ben White to replace Pontus Jansson was a big move, but it has turned out to be an absolute masterstroke. Helder Costa took a while to get going but he has been good, too.

"They started brilliantly, then they had a wobble. I was at that Nottingham Forest game in early February when they lost and you thought the wheels were coming off.

"They then went to Brentford and got a draw, and since then they have stabilised and kicked on. If they get the chance I expect them to finish the job."
