Effective altruism: From the fall of Sam Bankman-Fried to the rise of AI safety

TECH 24 © FRANCE 24

You may not have heard of it, but the social movement called "effective altruism" continues to influence public discourse around artificial intelligence, despite the fall from grace of the movement's highest-profile figure and one of its biggest donors: disgraced "crypto king" Sam Bankman-Fried. We take a closer look in this edition of Tech 24.

The UK's Bletchley Park summit on AI safety this week shows that one of effective altruism's top preoccupations is still making its way up the policy agenda: the risk that artificial intelligence could cause existential harm.

FRANCE 24's Technology Editor Peter O'Brien – who adds the disclaimer that he was briefly involved in the movement – says it's a talking point that would not be on the table were it not for effective altruism.
