Eerily quiet streets in Nottingham as people stay at home on Boxing Day evening

The streets of Nottingham were almost empty on Boxing Day evening after a busy day for city shops.

Few people wandered the roads on a subdued evening on Sunday, December 26.

Couples gathered in Nottingham's restaurants and there were sightings of friends fluttering between pubs, however, it was all too rare on a sometimes eerie night.

The scenes were in stark contrast to the daytime, where shoppers flocked to the Victoria Shopping Centre as the Boxing Day sales got under way.

It was also in spite of no further covid restrictions being introduced in England, whilst Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland brought in new measures.

A spark rare spark of life leaving Old Market Square was Cath Rodkoff, of Chilwell.

The 53-year-old was one of a three-generation family who had just been to see a pantomime that evening.

"We couldn't do this last year," she said.

"Some of the family have come from down south, I've had an awesome time."

She said that she "didn't expect" the city to be busy on a Boxing Day evening.

"I think people are just staying in and spending time with family, which I think is a good thing to do really. Especially as we couldn't really do that last year."

A number of reasons could be cited for the quiet atmosphere; family time, covid angst or full bellies. However, one thing is certain - with further sales looming, the city won't remain silent for long.
