Eerily quiet streets around Goodison Park on a Derby Day like no other

A historic once-in-a-lifetime derby without fans took place this afternoon.

For the first time in 126 years, a Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool went ahead with no fans.

Streets that would be full of supporters were left unusually quiet in eerie scenes.

Police lined the streets outside of Goodison Park after urging people not to gather outside of the stadium, in order to curb the spread of coronavirus.

There was a small handful of fans outside of the ground, but mostly young children eager to see the players' coaches arrived.

As well as a heightened police presence, including a police helicopter and officers on horses, there was a small team of photographers and reporters to report on the historic derby.

Pubs, cafes and take-away shops were left virtually empty on Sunday afternoon on what should have been a packed derby day.

Blues fans' favourite pub The Wimslow Hotel stood quiet, as Everton supporting children played football round the corner from it.

Extraordinary pictures also showed town's usually-packed bars empty, and streets around Goodison Park eerily quiet.

A few fans were there to lend their support as best they could with flags, but it wasn't the usual derby day scenes we're accustomed to.

Two passionate Liverpool FC fans, Joshua Power, nine, and Jack Urmson, 10, arrived outside of the ground hopeful to see the team.

A relative with the boys said they are "obsessed" with Liverpool and were desperate to see the players.

As they stood on one side of the road, a group of young children on the other side shouted "Everton" back at them.

While police and security were on hand outside of the stadium, there was also strict safety precautions followed at the grounds.

All staff were wearing masks and temperature checks were being taken for people entering.

Five minutes before kick off, a rainbow also fell on the grounds.
