Eerie pictures show a Bristol city centre on a Saturday night like never before

These eerie pictures show streets in the pub and club districts in Bristol deserted on Saturday night after the government's closure measures.

The usually bustling city centre was like ghost towns as boozers closed their doors as part of a crack down on public gatherings.

Club-goers stayed at home as the UK coronavirus death toll reached 233 - with more than 5,000 people infected.

In Bristol, the number of confirmed cases rose to 20.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson ramped up measures on Friday (March 20) in a bid to reduce "unnecessary" social gatherings by 75 per cent.

He ordered pubs, restaurants and leisure centres across the UK to close amid the spiralling COVID-19 crisis.

Thousands of revellers had ignored the government advice on Friday night as they hit boozers for one last blow out.

But on Saturday, streets such as King Street were left deserted as pubs closed their doors and put up notices informing customers.

Bingo halls, massage parlours, bookies and gyms are also among the businesses forced to close.

He said the order would put the country in a "better and stronger position and we will be able to save thousands of lives".

Mr Johnson said the closures will be reviewed on a monthly basis.
