Eerie photos show Leeds train station practically empty at rush hour

Leeds has the busiest train station in the north of England, with more than 30 million passengers using it every single year, and rush hour on a Monday morning is usually when it is most crowded.

But it seems as though thousands of regular commuters are already opting to stay at home over fears about the spread of coronavirus.

Pictures taken between 8am and 9am this morning show just how quiet Leeds station was today, with the few people who passed through it describing the scene as "eerie".

Rachel Angarano travelled into Leeds this morning on her way into work and posted a picture on Twitter to show what the station looked like at 8.15am.

The photo shows the view from the top of the stairs, looking down towards the ticket barriers at the main concourse - and there are just a handful of commuters in sight.

She tweeted: "'Rush hour' in Leeds, the third busiest station outside of London. Eerie."

Serena Stampfer travelled into Leeds a short while later and the station was similarly empty at around 9am.

Her picture was also taken from the passenger bridge over the station and shows platforms 14 and 15 practically empty.

Figures released on Sunday revealed that there has been a sharp increase in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Yorkshire.

There are now 91 cases across the county, which makes Yorkshire the fourth worst affected region from seven NHS areas.

In Leeds, the number of cases have gone from nine to 19, while in Sheffield there are 12 confirmed cases so far.
