'Eejit' Scots driver filmed reversing into oncoming traffic on busy motorway to avoid tailbacks

A crazed driver was filmed reversing into oncoming traffic on a busy Scots road following a serious crash this morning.

Junction 4a Harthill and Junction 5 Shotts of the M8 have been closed in both directions since an accident at around 4am on Friday.

The collision has caused major delays for drivers, with one motorist clearly determined not to get stuck in the tailbacks.

Derek Speirs, from Kirkintilloch, couldn't believe his eyes when he caught the silver Fiat Punto reversing into traffic on the busy A73 at the M8 Airdrie junction at around 9.20am today.

Landscaper Derek has been stuck on the road for over three hours since 7.30am.

The 40-year-old added: "I couldn't believe it when I realised what the person was actually doing.

"He was obviously trying to get onto the M8 but quickly realised how busy it was so instead of waiting in it he stopped the car on the busy road and started to reverse back into oncoming traffic to get off.

"I honestly thought there was going to be another accident. What an eejit."

Derek said there is no sign of the traffic clearing.

He added: "We're at a total standstill. My engine has been off for hours. Doesn't look like we're going anywhere anytime soon."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers are currently in attendance on the M8 near to junction 5 at Shotts following a road traffic incident.

" Police were called to the scene at 4.05am on Friday, 2 October.

"The road is currently closed in both directions between junction 4 and junction 5.

"Emergency services remain at the scene and drivers are asked to avoid the area, where possible."
