EE about to launch 5G in SIX cities - with 10 more coming by the end of the year

In great news for fans of streaming, the roll out of super-fast 5G networks across the UK is almost here.

In a statement to shareholders, EE owner BT Group said EE would "launch 5G imminently" and is "on track" to go live in 16 cities in 2019.

The first six cities 5G is coming to are: London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester

The next 10 cities will be: Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Hull, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry and Bristol.

BT chief executive Philip Jansen said: "Our aim is to deliver the best converged network and be the leader in fixed ultrafast and mobile 5G networks."

What is 5G? What it is, why it's important and when it will arrive in the UK

But the combined communications group didn't just want to increase mobile data speeds.

"We need to invest to improve our customer propositions and competitiveness," Jansen said.

"We need to invest to stay ahead in our fixed, mobile and core networks, and we need to invest to overhaul our business to ensure that we are using the latest systems and technology to improve our efficiency and become more agile."

And that means boosting broadband speeds too.

"Today we are announcing an increased target to pass 4million premises with ultrafast FTTP technology by 2020/21, up from 3million, and an ambition to pass 15 million premises by the mid-2020s, up from 10 million, if the conditions are right," he added.
