Edwina Currie in major WWE gaffe as grappling blunder leaves former Tory MP with egg on her face

Former Conservative MP Edwina Currie made a major mistake as she questioned the veracity of a panic buying video - which featured WWE wrestlers smashing up a supermarket.

The 73-year-old maintains an active presence on Twitter and has been offering commentary on the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

There have been scenes of panic buying across the UK as customers stockpile essential items ahead of an expected lockdown to deal with the spread of COVID-19.

But Currie was left with egg on her face after taking a WWE wrestling stunt at face value.

A video featuring Booker T and Stone Cold Steve Austin brawling in a supermarket, a promo for 2001's Wrestlemania was shared by one cheeky user with the caption: "disgusting scenes in ASDA Havant today when it should have been a time for the elderly and NHS staff, please retweet to name and shame".

The former MP for South Derbyshire was quick to spot that it was a fake - but was seemingly unaware of the wrestling connection.

She wrote: "You sure this isn’t staged? Nobody else around, no security staff, and whoever is filming is managing to get all the angles."

Social media was quick to respond, with Currie taking a major pounding from her followers. Here are a selection of the best replies.

@rosscojag1876: Edwina. Please use your influence to alert Boris Johnson. This whole fight was encouraged and instigated by a chap called Vince McMahon. He's said to have no respect for social distancing. We've got no chance in hell of containing the virus he says.

@extremecompute: Of course it is. All the shelves are fully stocked.

@waynesmith1971: I can't believe you once held power over ordinary people

@benjisauruss: It's real, you can tell by the logo in the bottom left - "WWF" is a manufacturer of mobile security cameras.
