Edwin van der Sar sends message to former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has wished ex-United boss Louis van Gaal all the best, as he comes out of retirement to take charge of the Netherlands national team for the third time in his career.

The Dutchman, who turns 70 in a few days time, has not stepped into the dugout since leaving Old Trafford back in May 2016.

Following his departure from United more than five years ago, Van Gaal, who won just one trophy during his two year-spell in England, announced his retirement from management in January 2017 — only to later say that it was only a sabbatical. However, he did officially confirm his retirement in March 2019.

Nevertheless, Van Gaal has now made the decision to come out of retirement and return to management, taking charge of his country for the third time, following on from his spells in charge between 2000-2002 and 2012-2014.

He has succeeded former Crystal Palace chief Frank de Boer, who was axed following the Netherlands' round-of-16 exit to the Czech Republic at Euro 2020 in June.

Now, following confirmation of his return to the dugout, former United goalkeeper Van der Sar, who spent six years at Old Trafford, has wished his fellow countryman good luck in his new role.

Posting a message on Twitter, the former Old Trafford favourite said: "Van Gaal is back as manager of the Dutch National Team. A great coach who will get the best out of the players.

"Good luck with this new challenge, Louis!"

While Van Gaal has made a return to management with the Dutch national team, Van der Sar, who left United back in 2011 following his retirement, is currently working at Dutch giants Ajax, operating as chief executive officer.

Van Gaal will take charge of the Netherlands again for the first time when they face Norway away from home next month in a FIFA World Cup qualifier.
