Edwin van der Sar reveals he could have joined Liverpool FC before signing for Manchester United

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has sensationally revealed he could have joined arch-rivals, Liverpool.

The Dutch shot-stopper went on to make 266 appearances for the Red Devils after signing from Fulham in 2005.

During his time at Old Trafford, the legendary 'keeper won four Premier League titles, the Champions League, the League Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup before retiring in 2011.

However, it has been revealed that it could have been oh so different for van der Sar as he could have ended up on Merseyside instead.

In 2001, Liverpool were in the market for a new number one after a string of unconvincing displays from Sander Westerveld, with Gerard Houllier then the manager.

The Reds eventually plumped for Jerzy Dudek, with Chris Kirkland acting as his understudy at Anfield.

However, van der Sar has admitted it could have been him pulling on the red shirt at Liverpool, ahead of their trip to Old Trafford this Sunday.

The goalkeeper, now a Chief Executive at Ajax, told Goal: “I had two options and could have transferred to Liverpool or Dortmund.

“Both clubs hesitated a bit, so in the end I chose Fulham.”

United then swooped for the big Dutch stopper at the age of 34, who proved to be a successful replacement for Peter Schmeichel after years of chasing someone fit to fill the Dane's shoes.

The likes of Mark Bosnich, Massimo Taibi, Raimond van der Gouw, Fabien Barthez, Tim Howard and Roy Carroll all struggled but van der Sar proved to be the man fit to fill the Old Trafford goal.
