Edwin van der Sar responds to speculation he will be Man Utd's next Director of Football

Edwin van der Sar has cooled speculation he is set to return to Manchester United to become the club's first Director of Football.

The Red Devils are keen to install someone in the role to oversee the club's transfers and have identified their former goalkeeper Van der Sar as an ideal candidate.

The Dutchman is currently the chief executive at Ajax, who reached the semi-final of the Champions League last season with a young and talented group of players.

Van der Sar has hinted that he would like to remain in Amsterdam to continue his work at the club he first turned out for as a professional.

When asked about a return to Manchester United at Vincent Kompany's testimonial at the Etihad on Wednesday night, Van Der Sar played it down.

The Dutchman said: "I am enjoying my time at Ajax. I've got a different role - chief executive.

"I am really looking forward to bringing Ajax back to the European top level - that we probably touched last year - and to make sure we get the best opportunity to stay there."

Manchester United had plans to install someone as a technical director before the start of the summer transfer window and drew up a list of candidates including Rio Ferdinand.

No one has yet been employed in the role, with Van Der Sar remaining the favourite despite his recent comments suggesting otherwise.
