Edwin van der Sar names Manchester United regret with Rio Ferdinand

Edwin van der Sar told Rio Ferdinand that he regrets not being able to lift a second Champions League title during their time at Manchester United.

Wednesday marked 18 years since Ferdinand joined United from Leeds for £30million, breaking the British transfer record at the time.

Ferdinand won the Premier League in his first season at the club and will be remembered as one of the club's greatest defenders in history, ending his United career with six league titles and 14 trophies in total.

The former England international was part of the United side which lifted the Champions League trophy in 2008 after defeating Chelsea, with Van der Sar saving a crucial penalty from Nicolas Anelka in the shoot-out on his way to being named man of the match.

United failed to defend their crown a year later in Rome but had the chance to lift the famous trophy again on home soil when they faced Barcelona at Wembley in 2011. However, a masterclass from Lionel Messi saw the Spanish giants secure a 3-1 win to leave Ferdinand and Van Der Sar as runners-up.

Van Der Sar commented on Ferdinand's Instagram post that he regrets not being able to secure a second European title during their dominant spell under Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Only eight goals scored," he wrote, poking fun at Ferdinand's achievements. "To be fair, I enjoyed every minute of those six years we played together and ruled the Premier League and Europe for one year.

"Should have been at least two Champions Leagues."

In the replies, Manchester United fans echoed Van Der Sar's view.

One wrote: "It was unfortunate that the team coincided with Pep [Guardiola]'s Barcelona - the greatest club side ever. If not for them, it would have been three Champions Leagues."

Another added: "You said it Edwin but we appreciate what you both did for the club while you were there."

Finally, one supporter made a cheeky request to the Ajax director to return to Old Trafford in a scouting role. He wrote: "Come back to United and we will win another two with you."
