Edwin van der Sar asked about Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson

Edwin van der Sar has suggested a move for Dean Henderson from Manchester United 'makes no sense' next month.

MEN Sport revealed last week exploratory talks over a loan transfer were held while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the United manager and it remains to be seen what interim manager Ralf Rangnick's plans are for Henderson.

The 24-year-old has only played twice all season and is open to embarking on a six-month or 18-month loan move in the new year. Dutch sources have confirmed Ajax's interest and the club enquired about Henderson 18 months ago when his season-long loan with Sheffield United ended.

United have still not decided whether to let Henderson go on loan in January and now Ajax executive Van der Sar has distanced his side from a possible deal for Henderson.

“I’ve heard nowadays you can pay €2,000 a month and hire media agencies to throw out nice stories about players into the world," he told Voetbal Primeur.

“I’m talking about social media, so to speak. You are continuously linked to players, whether they come from South America or Eastern Europe. But no, this makes no sense."

The current goalkeeping situation at Ajax is complex with Andre Onana have only played once since January due to a doping ban and is out of contract in June.

Maarten Stekelenburg, the back-up keeper, sustained a season-ending hip injury in August and the 38-year-old Remko Pasveer, who joined Ajax from Vitesse Arnhem in the summer, has started in 16 of Ajax's 17 games since.

Van der Sar was also quizzed on Onana and confirmed he has turned down a number of new deals at the Dutch giants.

He added: "It’s really sad how it turned out, actually. He walks out the door so transfer-free, without us as Ajax being to blame.

"We have sat with him several times to extend his contract, including during the suspension. It has come to nothing and it hurts me personally. This is going to hurt the club too. Whether I am disappointed in him? Yes. After the arbitration case, you also expect something in return.”
