Edwin van der Sar blames Celtic’s Premiership rivals for Hoops’ European struggles

Edwin van der Sar has blamed Celtic’s Scottish Premiership rivals for the Hoops’ European struggles.

Neil Lennon’s side reached the Europa League group stage to cushion the blow of spinning out of Champions League qualifying to Cluj.

Ajax chief van der Sar has led a crusade to champion the cause of clubs from countries such as Scotland, Holland and Denmark because he insists it's wrong they have to go through four qualifying rounds.

And the former Manchester United and Holland goalkeeper, who is the chief executive of Ajax and the vice-president of the European Club Association, has told UEFA they should look at club performances rather than use country coefficients.

The 48-year-old said: "Clubs like Celtic are largely responsible for the coefficient points in their country. But they are forced to depend on other clubs in their country.

"It's not right that clubs who have never done anything in European football get the significant advantage of Champions League direct entry because of the performances of other clubs in their country, while top clubs from other countries like ourselves, Scotland and Denmark have to struggle through many qualification rounds.

"We would welcome it if access to European competitions, particularly the Champions League, is to a greater extent determined by individual club performance, rather than country performance.

"Then clubs such as Celtic, FC Copenhagen, PSV Eindhoven and Ajax have a better chance of reaching the Champions League through their own merits, rather than clubs like Atalanta or Red Bull Leipzig, who qualified directly not because of their own individual performances in Europe, but through their country's coefficient."
