Edwin Poots is bookies' favourite to succeed Arlene Foster as leader of the DUP

Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots is the bookies' favourite to succeed Arlene Foster as the next leader of the DUP.

The Lagan Valley MLA has the shortest odds at 4/6 followed by the constituency's MP Sir Jeffrey Donaldson at 2/1.

East Belfast MP Gavin Robinson is in third place with Sean Graham Bookmakers at 4/1.

Others in the running according to the betting firm are North Antrim MP Ian Paisley and South Belfast MLA Christopher Stalford, both at 6/1.

The 7/1 outsiders are Economy Minister Diane Dodds and Junior Minister Gordon Lyons.

Aside from these key names, Ladbrokes is also offering odds of 10/1 on deputy leader Nigel Dodds or East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson taking the top job.

The DUP has never had a formal contest to choose a new leader.

Indications are that it could be the case that the party attempts to split the First Minister and DUP leader positions.
