CLEVELAND _ It was an old-school duel between Corey Kluber and Tyler Glasnow, and the up-and-coming star blinked first.
Kluber and Glasnow each dominated Friday night, but one Edwin Encarnacion swing proved decisive as the Indians topped the Tampa Bay Rays, 3-0, at Progressive Field.
Kluber, the two-time Cy Young Award winner, and Glasnow, one of the brighter young pitchers in the game, both put on a show.
Both lasted seven innings. Both gave up two hits. Both struck out at least six batters _ Kluber bested Glasnow with eight.
It wasn't until the bottom of the seventh inning that either offense scratched a run across home plate. With the Indians having mustered only one hit at that point, Encarnacion belted a solo home run to right-center field to break the scoreless deadlock. It was his 29th home run and 92nd RBI of the season.
The Indians then tacked on some insurance runs in the eighth. Greg Allen singled and stole second base before advancing to third and then home on wild pitches to make it 2-0.
Francisco Lindor, who walked as Allen made his way around the bases, stole second base and third base and then scored on Michael Brantley's single up the middle, extending the Indians' lead to 3-0.
Cody Allen entered in the eighth to pitch for the third consecutive game as he continues to work out some mechanical issues. For the second consecutive day, he turned in a quality performance. Allen worked a scoreless eighth, striking out two and earning a loud ovation from the home crowd, which booed him only two days ago.
Brad Hand pitched the ninth to earn his 31st save and seventh as a member of the Indians.
