Edwin Diaz blows second consecutive save as Mets lose to Nationals, 4-3

The Mets can only endure so many familiar — and preventable — implosions in one season.

One day after the Mets bullpen did not allow a hit in 4 2/3 scoreless innings, Edwin Diaz fell apart in the ninth inning.

The Mets closer blew his second straight save opportunity in the Mets’ 4-3 loss to the Nationals on Monday afternoon at Nationals Park. Diaz walked the leadoff batter and secured his first and only out by getting Juan Soto to fly out to left field. But Diaz walked Josh Bell immediately after to put the tying and winning run on second and first base, respectively.

Diaz allowed an RBI single to Andrew Stevenson that tied the game before Carter Kieboom walked it off on an RBI single, deflected by Francisco Lindor, to seal the Mets’ tough loss to their division rival.

The Mets (69-69) took three out of five against Washington in the five-game series.
