Edward Snowden: Former NSA contractor sued by US over new book 'Permanent Record'

Former NSA contractor Edward Snowden is being sued by the United States over his new book.

A lawsuit was filed on Tuesday against Mr Snowden, who in 2013 leaked secret documents about U.S. telephone and Internet surveillance.

It said his new book violates non-disclosure agreements.

The Justice Department said Snowden published his book, "Permanent Record," without submitting it to intelligence agencies for review.

It added that speeches given by Snowden also violated nondisclosure agreements.

The United States is seeking all proceeds earned by Mr Snowden for the book, the Justice Department said.

“Intelligence information should protect our nation, not provide personal profit,” said G. Zachary Terwilliger, US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

“This lawsuit will ensure that Edward Snowden receives no monetary benefits from breaching the trust placed in him.”

In his memoir, MR Snowden tells his life story in detail for the first time and explains why he chose to risk his freedom to become perhaps the most famous whistleblower of all time.

It offers an expansive account of how he came to reveal secret details about the government's mass collection of emails, phone calls and Internet activity in the name of national security.

He was charged under the US Espionage Act and he now lives in Russia in order to avoid arrest.

General Jody Hunt said in a statement. "We will not permit individuals to enrich themselves, at the expense of the United States, without complying with their pre-publication review obligations."
