Edward Snowden and the unanswered question about US bases

David Davis is right about the trust that is heaped on government when it comes to surveillance, whether legal or not (G2 interview, 9 November). We have been pursuing this for years (many of us in CAAB live close to the secretive and unaccountable American base at Menwith Hill run by the NSA). We are no further forward despite asking questions of parliament. The answers are contradictory, evasive and thin. We do not know who these US bases are accountable to. We do know, however, that the NSA is key to the surveillance, which they ask GCHQ to do for them. We need brave and persistent people like Edward Snowden, David Davis and Tom Watson to be the public minders and scrutineers to check the power of the executive. But please would someone tell us who the US visiting forces are accountable to in this country? They are out of the control of the UK government.

Joint coordinator, Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases (CAAB)
