Edward Colston statue topplers get mixed reaction across UK newspapers

Four people being cleared of criminal damage in connection with the toppling of the statue of Edward Colston has recreated a lot of debate.

Some MPs have vowed to review loopholes, while national papers have presented the verdict with mixed responses.

Rhian Graham, 30, of Colston Road, Easton in Bristol; Milo Ponsford, 26, of Otter Close in Bishopstoke, Hampshire; Jake Skuse, 37, of Farley Close in Little Stoke, South Gloucestershire and Sage Willoughby, 22, of Gloucester Road in Bristol, were all found not guilty by a jury on Wednesday, January 5.

The toppling of the statue of controversial slave trader, Colston, happened at the end of a Black Lives Matter rally in Bristol city centre, as part of worldwide protests following the murder in the US of George Floyd.

As you would expect, most national papers have led on Bristol's court case.

The Guardian's splash was a neutral 'four cleared over toppling of Edward Colston Statue'.

The front-page of the Express went for a more critical line, saying: 'Statue 'vandals' cleared....but where will it all end?'.

While the Metro opted for a positive 'statue liberty'.
