Edward Colston statue: Piers Morgan praises Black Lives Matter protesters live on GMB

Bristol protesters who ripped down a statue of Edward Colston in the city centre have found an ally in Piers Morgan.

The GMB host defended the actions of Black Lives Matter protesters who pushed the statue of the slave trader into the harbour, Mirror Online reports.

Piers said the statue was a "symbol of white supremacy" and while he did not agree with the desecration of the statue of Winston Churchill, he said they were two separate issues.

Piers said: "The statue was standing over them, as if he still owned them, and I have a problem with that."

"So many black people living in Bristol, what must they have been feeling, walking past that statue every day, that guy used to own our ancestors and trade them, and kill them in transportation."

Piers continued: "To me, there's a complete difference between somebody like Edward Colston and Sir Winston Churchill.

"Sir Winston Churchill saved this country from the Nazis.

"Edward Colston made a fortune off the slave trade and used that fortune then to invest back into the community - schools and so on."

Piers then countered: "But I'm sorry, he was using slave trade money to do it. Time has moved on.

"History, I'm afraid, will judge him on the slave trading and ownership rather than his work in the community.

He also criticised Home Secretary Priti Patel, who said she was "outraged" that the statue was toppled, saying: "You should be more angry about George Floyd's death than you are about a slave owner's statue being dumped in water".
