Edward Colston statue investigation: Police update on nine people interviewed

Police in Bristol have issued an update on their investigation into the toppling of the statue of slave trader Edward Colston.

The statue was pulled down during a Black Lives Matter protest on June 7, before being dumped in Bristol Harbour.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary's decision to not arrest anyone on the scene caused much debate at the time.

The force then released CCTV footage and other pictures and video to identify 18 people they wanted to speak to.

Eight people were interviewed and one person was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage as a result of these enquiries.

And police chief Andy Marsh has now explained the latest developments in the investigation:

  • Police propose to send four of the individual cases to the Crown Prosecution Service to make a charging decision
  • Five people have been offered the opportunity for "restorative justice"

"The law was broken, it was an act of criminal damage," the chief constable told BBC Radio Bristol on Thursday.

"Fortunately, as far as I'm concerned, it was one crime, one act of damage in an event that carried a significant amount of risk for Bristol and the community.

"We've offered the lawyers for the other five the opportunity for restorative justice.

"We propose they will pay a fine and do some acts to make good their crime.

"If they refuse to take that, and they'll have a week to make their mind up, then they will be added to the four that are going to the Crown Prosecution Service."

Police previously said that a 24-year-old man from Eastleigh, Hampshire, had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Officers also arrested a 27-year-old man, who was later released with no further action taken.
