Edward Colston documentary will air this autumn

When Edward Colston's statue was torn down and dumped into the Floating Harbour the entire world's gaze was on Bristol.

But long before the dramatic event, film director Micheal Jenkins had been making a documentary about our city and its dubious links to the slave trader.

Bristol's homage to the 18C merchant, who transported into slavery an estimated 84,000 Africans, has been questioned throughout the centuries.

However, little action has been taken to distance schools and other institutions from the controversial figure.

In 2017, Colston Hall announced it was changing its name following years of campaigning by protesters - including Massive Attack.

Michael was there to record the demonstrators which lead to this change.

"I've been filming for four years but the most interesting thing I have learnt is how deeply ingrained Colston and his name is, in the city," said Micheal.

"I think the removal of the statue has enabled a dialogue to open up about the city's past and what represents the city today.

"I'm not sure what should happen with the space but currently the space is being used for discussion. which can only be a good thing."

Within a week of the bronze statue being toppled, Colston Hall and Colston Tower removed the merchant's name from their buildings.

While Colston's School announced 'ongoing' talks were taking place over a new name and Bristol University launched a review into its crest.

Micheal hasn't named his documentary yet and is currently in discussions with broadcasters.
