The Higher Education Commission will ask various universities to suspend 182 courses it deems to be substandard for a period of two years.
HEC secretary-general Supat Jampathong said on Monday that 182 of the 9,099 curricula, or 2%, offered at universities nationwide were found to be substandard in 2015 and in 2016.
The HEC would announce the 182 substandard courses on its www.mua.go.th website in the near future, he said.
"Most of the substandard curricula show problems of having insufficient lecturers and their course structures failing to meet criteria," he said.
The HEC had no authority to force the universities to stop the courses, so it would ask for their cooperation. Authority rested with the councils of the universities, Mr Supat said.
The universities would be asked to stop admitting new students to the courses. For students already studying them, the HEC would ask the universities to develop the courses to meet the standard within three months, he said.
