Educating Greater Manchester school changes name and gives pupils free uniform

The school made famous in the TV documentary Educating Greater Manchester is changing its name and offering free blazers to pupils.

From September, Harrop Fold School will become The Lowry Academy after it was taken out of council control.

The name will be somewhat familiar to Salford residents as there was previously a Lowry High School in Lower Broughton, but that closed in 2000.

Harrop will take the artist's name as part of its conversion into an academy, now run by the United Learning multi-academy trust.

The trust already runs 10 schools in Greater Manchester, including two primary schools and three secondary schools in Salford.

As part of the changes, parents have been told that all children in Years 8 to 11, will be given vouchers for new blazers and ties, saving them £33 per child.

Girls will also get a voucher for a skirt, without the logo on, saving them a further £18.

The second series of Channel 4's fly-on-the-wall documentary was filmed at a tumultuous time for the Little Hulton school in which headteacher Drew Povey and three other staff members were suspended.

It was later rated 'inadequate' by watchdog Ofsted, which put the school into special measures.

With a new principal Claire Coy in place and its new academy status, parents are hoping it'll be a fresh start for the school.

Donna Hoye, whose son Ryan is going into his final year in September, said: "I think the school have been through a lot, Harrop had a lot of drama going on not long ago, so I think the name change will be a good thing.

"The new headteacher seems to be doing a great job turning the school around and having a name change will help them start a fresh.

"I think it’s a really good gesture from the school to pay for part of their uniforms."

In a letter to parents, Mrs Coy said: "You will recall I wrote to you some time ago asking you not to purchase new uniform for September as there will be small changes.

"As we change the name we will of course update the logo on our uniform, all other aspects of the uniform remain the same (colour etc).

"I am pleased to tell you that we have sourced funding to do this and have worked with uniform suppliers to finalise the designs. All parents of students in Years 8-10 will be provided, free of charge, with the following:

Female students:

  • A blazer – with the new Lowry Academy logo on it
  • A skirt which does not have a logo on it
  • A tie – the colour will be specific to their year group.

Male students:

  • A blazer – with the new Lowry Academy logo on it
  • A tie – the colour will be specific to their year group.

"I have taken the decision to provide a new skirt for female students as the current skirt has the logo on it. A PE kit with the new school logo is available to purchase.

"However, it is perfectly acceptable for students to wear existing PE kit until they grow out of it. I do not wish parents to go to additional expense."

A spokesperson for the school said: "The new name and uniform have been welcomed across the current school community. The school today is very different to several years ago and we all feel that, as we move forward positively with considerable improvement across the school, the time is right to recognise this in the name and uniform.

“The name has been welcomed as one that continues to reflect our locality and champion our pride in the area.

“To avoid additional costs for parents, we are providing vouchers for new aspects of the uniform. Once again this has been welcomed by the school community."

What do you think of the school's new name? Do you think it's a good idea to give parents vouchers for free uniform? Let us know in the comments.
