Four series in, Channel 4’s Educating ... strand remains an increasingly rare thing in modern television: an obs-doc that doesn’t try to belittle or misrepresent its subjects. And while last year’s Educating the East End didn’t quite match the acclaim of the outstanding Educating Yorkshire, it still contained enough cockle-warming moments to make another series a no-brainer.
Step forward, then, the Willows school in Tremorfa, the setting of Educating Cardiff. The trailer for the series has been released by Channel 4, and contains the usual mix of gobby students and witty, slightly world-weary educators (“You’re breaking the rules of mathematics there”) plus inspirational head teacher Joy Ballard. “I don’t think it’s fair that your postcode can determine your life chances,” she says. “I think an education should give every child a chance.” Expect her to practice what she preaches in the full series, which begins 25 August.
