Edu told to cancel £60m January bid to sign popular midfielder on loan before big summer deal

Mikel Arteta has been handed a January transfer window conundrum that he and Edu must solve following concerns that Arsenal lack depth.

The Gunners have already suffered the injury of Granit Xhaka this season, forcing the north London side to revaluate their approach both tactically and financially.

While Albert Sambi Lokonga and Thomas Partey have seemingly picked up the reins of Arteta's midfield, Arsenal can not afford to risk further setbacks in their pursuit of European football.

However, despite the likes Renato Sanches, Denis Zakaria and even Aaron Ramsey - who are worth an eye-watering combined value of £60.3 million, as per Transfermarkt - hitting the headlines, Edu has been urged to consider short-term options in January opposed to a long-term commitment.

Tom Canton and Umar Choudhry spoke live on The Arsenal Way to delve into Arteta's midfield situation ahead of the January transfer window.

Choudhry kickstarted proceedings by explaining how Xhaka's swift return from injury has solved many of the Gunners' woes ahead of such a busy schedule.

"If there is an opportunity where we're playing at home against certain teams then maybe Odegaard could play alongside Lokonga because we'll likely have a lot of the ball," he said.

"I think that there are enough options rather than us splashing the cash. If Xhaka's injury was long-term - April, March time - then I'd say, 'yeah, let's assess the situation,' and get someone in even on a short-term deal."

Choudhry continued by noting his hesitancy around the potential arrival of Sanches at the Emirates but did suggest what would make him think twice.

"I think we'll see Xhaka back just in time for the festive period, which we'll be needing him for," he said.

"The likes of Renato Sanches are going to cost money so us splashing the cash on someone with a history of injuries - I don't think it's worth it, but if it was a short-term loan deal then maybe."

Canton added by tabling his interest in Arsenal exploring a six-month loan deal for a midfielder in the winter window.

"I think it's difficult to sign a player who is going to add significant quality to this team in January," he said.

"There are players out there so if we say got a loan for a player in that position then that's fine, that's sensible. People have brought up Aaron Ramsey's name - would I take him on a six-month deal? Yeah, probably.

"I just think adding that little bit of cover is necessary."
