Edu's two main January transfer priorities at Arsenal have been revealed after Everton loss

Alan Shearer has delivered a brutal assessment of Arsenal's problems under Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners slumped to yet another Premier League defeat on Saturday evening, this time away at Everton as Yerry Mina's goal in first-half injury time turned out to be the difference between the two sides.

For the fifth league game running Arsenal conceded the first goal when Rob Holding - captaining the side in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's absence - inadvertently turned Dominic Calvert-Lewin's header into his own net.

Nicolas Pepe's penalty restored parity, but the visitors were undone from a corner at the end of the first-half and couldn't find a goal in the second half as their poor Premier League form continues.

Mikel Arteta press conference after Everton defeat

As a result, Arsenal find themselves four points clear of the relegation zone after 14 games - the club's worst ever start to a league campaign - and the threat of going down is becoming a very real prospect.

And Shearer is not 100% convinced that Mikel Arteta 's side will stay up.

" I wouldn’t be so sure, not with that starting team, not with that attitude of some of those players," Shearer responded on Match of the Day when asked if he believes the Gunners have enough to stay in the division.

And the reason for the ex-Newcastle United and England striker's rather surprising stance is a lack of goals in the squad.

"It is awful," Shearer added. "They have no creativity, players going through the motions, players not working hard enough, players not closing down and Arteta should be a worried man relying on that group of players trying to save his job.

"They have scored 12 goals all season and this is why. When the ball goes wide [to the left] there, look at [Nicolas] Pepe. He is not prepared to get into the box. He is just jogging, sometimes walking, and he has got to do more.

"He has got to try and get on the end of it and give his team-mates more options.

"It is no wonder they’re not creating chances and scoring goals when you have got players doing that sort of thing [being lazy]. You have to be prepared to do more.

"There are a few players in there not helping the manager. They’re never going to score goals playing like that."

Shearer's comments simply highlight what business Arsenal must get done in the January transfer window.

The club's technical director Edu has already revealed that a creative midfielder is a priority amid links to the likes of Houssem Aouar, Christian Eriksen, and Emi Buendia.

But with three Premier League goals between all 11 players that started at Goodison Park, it's become clear that the Gunners also need to increase their firepower so another attacker should be on their radar.
