Edu's key role in securing Gabriel Magalhaes transfer for Arsenal

Arsenal technical director Edu has played a crucial in the seemingly imminent signing of Lille centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes - with the former Gunners midfielder "decisive" in convincing the 22-year-old of a move to north London.

Edu, who was appointed to his role at the Emirates last year, has already lured fellow Brazilian Willian to the club, as well as being instrumental in the signing of Spanish defender Pablo Mari from Flamengo.

After both Arsenal and Napoli agreed a transfer fee with Lille, it was down to the player himself to decide which team offered him a brighter future.

And according to The Telegraph Edu was a crucial factor in persuading Gabriel that the Premier League was for him rather than Serie A.

It is believed that the 44-year-old has impressed those at the club since he has been in the role, and he is expected to be given even more responsibility when it comes to transfers now that former head of football Raul Sanllhi has left.

Gabriel, meanwhile, travelled to London on Monday, and an announcement from Arsenal confirming his signing could happen at any moment.

He has been a key member of the Lille squad last season, and played in all six of their Champions League fixtures.

He will add further strength in depth to the Gunners defence, with Cedric Soares and Mari also confirmed to be signing permanently following their loan spells.

With William Saliba also returning to the club after his loan at Saint-Etienne, manager Mikel Arteta will have a number of options to choose from when the new campaign gets underway.

They are now likely to focus on adding to their attacking options - with the immediate priority getting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's new contract signed off before they turn their attentions to further signings.
