Edu's £31.5m masterstroke solves Arsenal's Bernardo Silva transfer dilemma as Arteta eyes dream XI

Martin Odegaard recorded two key passes in Norway's 2-0 win over Montenegro to become the best under-23 creator in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

The 23-year-old has now created 27 key passes and five big chances across eight qualifying games, guiding Norway to second in Group G and just two points off of leaders Netherlands.

Arsenal's £31.5 million summer signing from Real Madrid has ranked above the likes of Phil Foden, Kai Havertz and Mason Mount so far despite actually recording a direct goal contribution in the competition yet.

However, despite this, Odegaard has captained his country within touching distance of a flight to Qatar in the winter while operating across various positions whether it be as an eight, ten, or on the wing.

By highlighting his ability to sustain a world-leading creative output for Norway across a handful of positions, Odegaard has seemingly solved Arsenal's transfer dilemma regarding the interest of Manchester City's Bernardo Silva.

The Mirror reported that over the summer Mikel Arteta's side were rumoured to be keen on the arrival of the Portuguese midfielder, who can also play most positions in the final thirds of the pitch.

Odegaard eventually swapped the Santiago Bernabeu for the Emirates to make his swift return but the Norwegian's recent successes and praise from his managers has reopened the door to a world where both he and Silva can coexist.

If Arsenal were to sign Silva, Arteta would not be hampering Odegaard's minutes but instead easing the weight load on his shoulders to perform week in, week out.

Suddenly an Arsenal line-up with Odegaard in a three with Emile Smith Rowe and Thomas Partey while Silva occupies a role on the wing or as a false nine doesn't seem wildly impossible.

Norway boss Ståle Solbakken agrees with the principle in question, hailing the Arsenal midfielder for his versatility.

Speaking in January 2021 following Odegaard's initial loan spell at the Emirates, Solbakken spoke to Norwegian outlet VG about how his captain's versatility and ability to create chances wherever he is played will serve him well at Arsenal.

"The way Arsenal play will fit him well, a kind of football that suits him," said the Norway boss, before going on to highlight how Odegaard can maintain his high levels whether he features as a ten, eight or on the wing.

"He can also play in different midfield roles, whichever Mikel Arteta chooses. He will get assists and be a good team player."
