Mikel Arteta should let Manchester United complete the signing of Mauro Icardi to avoid Arsenal repeating a similar Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang mistake.
According to Italian outlet Calciomercato , United plan to sign the Argentine forward if Edison Cavani decides to call time on his career at Old Trafford.
It recently emerged that Icardi has reportedly been deemed surplus to requirements by PSG and has been placed on the transfer list alongside six other players, according to French outlet l'Equipe.
Arsenal have made signing a striker a priority for the upcoming windows, and the north London side was one of the clubs linked with securing Icardi’s signature.
The 28-year-old forward has fallen out of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans so far this season, with him primarily being used as an option from the substitutes bench.
One of the reasons for this is because he is arguably competing with Europe’s best forwards in Neymar , Kylian Mbappe, and Lionel Messi to stake a claim in the side.
However, another factor has been due to his off-the-field antics, which has caused his name to be mentioned under controversy, rather than the quality of his performances.
With Arsenal recently punishing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a breach of disciplinary rules, the club could be putting themselves in a similar situation if they were to push through with the Icardi deal.
Aubameyang has been left out of the squad for the club's recent outings and speculation is growing around his future at the Gunners. It was recently announced that he would not return to first-team training until after the Africa Cup of Nations has finished.
And with the Gabonese international considered as Arsenal’s most prolific striker, it means that Edu will need to replace him with a striker who can follow a similar, if not better goal-scoring record.
Icardi’s goal statistics when he was a player at Inter Milan showed that he was capable of leading the line, as he scored 124 goals in 219 games for the Serie A side.
However, since his move to PSG in 2019, his career has seen a major regression, and due to the high energy that Arteta expects from his players, it means Icardi certainly would not be the correct striker replacement for Aubameyang, and the club should let Manchester United complete a deal.
