Edu in talks to seal Arsenal's next transfer deal as January deadline edges closer

French outfit AS Monaco are in talks with Arsenal about signing midfielder Lucas Torriera on loan.

That is according to a report by Sky Sports, who claim the Ligue 1 club are keen to sign the Uruguay international on a temporary basis ahead of Monday's deadline.

The 24-year-old, formerly of Italian outfit Sampdoria, is currently on loan at Spanish giants Atletico Madrid but has struggled to cement himself in Diego Simeone's plans in the Spanish capital. Since joining the La Liga side during the summer transfer window, the midfielder has racked up 15 appearances in all competitions, but has started just two matches in the league.

How Odegaard fits in, his favourite Arsenal player and what is next in the transfer market

Last month, Arsenal technical director Edu admitted that he held "worries" about Torreira and his lack of game time in Spain.

With an opportunity to break into the starting line-up unlikely if he was to return to Arsenal, Torreira looks set to leave on loan once again his his loan deal at Atletico is terminated ahead of Monday's deadline.

Recently, Gunners manager Mikel Arteta, who will be looking to see his side maintain their excellent run of form in the Premier League when they face Manchester United on Saturday, said: "We've been talking to Lucas - Edu has been very close the situation.

"He hasn't been playing as many minutes as he would like, as we would like, but to be fair the team is doing so well that it's understandable they don't change the team so much.

"We just want to be right behind Lucas, protect him, help him to make the right decision for the future.

"Let's see what happens, but we are monitoring the situation very closely. At the moment he's going to stay in Atletico, that's my belief.

"I don't know if something's going to change in the next two or three days."

Torreira joined Arsenal back in 2018 and has since made 89 appearances in all competitions for the north London club.

However, he appears unlikely to increase that tally anytime soon, with Monaco keen to secure his signature before the window closes.

Should the Uruguay ace, who turns 25-years-old next month, join the French club, he would follow in the footsteps of the likes of Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas to have played for both Arsenal in the Ligue 1 side.
