Edu has 'opened transfer talks' to try and complete Arsenal's first summer signing

Arsenal have reportedly opened talks with Sweden striker Alexander Isak about the prospect of him sealing a summer switch to the Emirates Stadium.

That is according to a report by AS in Spain, who say that the Gunners, who will lock horns with Brentford on the opening day of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign in less than two months time, have 'made ground' in the race to sign the highly-rated Real Sociedad ace.

Isak, who has played a key role in helping Sweden reach the knockout stages of Euro 2020, successfully winning Group E in the process, is considered as one of the most exciting and talented young strikers in world football.

He netted 17 goals in 34 La Liga appearances during the 2020/21 campaign, successfully earning himself La Liga's Young Player of the Year award in the process.

Arsenal were first said to have a keen interest in Isak prior to Euro 2020 getting started earlier this month, with a report by The Athletic insisting that the Gunners were going to launch a move for the youngster if a striker was to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer.

In truth, the prospect of Gunners manager Mikel Arteta's forward line being trimmed this summer is likely, with both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah's future in north London under threat. Arsenal are open to selling Nketiah this summer whilst Lacazette is yet to sign a contract that runs beyond the end of next season.

Thus, with Arsenal reported to have entered talks with Isak it suggests that they are preparing to make a key change to their attacking options, with the Swede understood to have a release clause within his contract worth £59.8million, but Arsenal are reportedly 'willing to meet it'.

But considering that Arsenal find themselves in a position where they need to sell to buy this summer, as well as looking to strengthen a number of areas within the squad, it would suggest that signing Isak may be a long shot. However, Arsenal are determined to become a competitive unit once again, meaning signing a player of Isak's potential and capabilities would be a step in the right direction.

Arsenal, though, are not alone in the hunt to secure Isak's signature as both Chelsea and Real Madrid are also showing an interest.
