Edu handed major boost over Arsenal transfer mission as Mikel Arteta hints at surprise signing

Here's all the news from around the Emirates Stadium over the past 24 hours.

Arteta transcript

The Arsenal manager faced the media ahead of the Southampton game and the main talking point from his press conference was about Mesut Ozil's imminent exit.

"Yeah, but the quarantine situation is making that final step the longest ever. They have a lot of restrictions there are things that have to be done before announcing everything.

"I think everything seems to be going ok, but I cannot say definitely what’s going to happen.

"So as soon as we can don’t worry we will mention it.

"He’s a great footballer and he’s a really talented footballer. He’s a player that has done a lot for the football club. But at the moment I want to take the team in a different direction.

"If we had more options maybe he was part of some plans. He was part of some plans at the start and he wasn’t anymore at the end."

Transfer hint

Mikel Arteta has hinted at Arsenal's next transfer mission with less than two weeks until deadline day.

So far this month, the focus at the Emirates Stadium has been on player departures rather than new arrivals with Matt Macey, Sokratis, Sead Kolasinac, and William Saliba all leaving.

And with Ozil's move to Fenerbahce expected to be confirmed in the coming days, Arteta has admitted the priority from now until the January transfer window closes will be on potential incomings.

The Gunners are short of a natural left-back following Kolasinac's loan move to Schalke, and Arteta has hinted at dipping into the market to provide cover for Kieran Tierney.

"With the departure of Kola we’re a little bit short with a left-footed full-back at the moment," Arteta said. "We can use Ainsley there, we can use Bukayo there, we can use Cedric who’s played in that position.

"We have some options. But a natural option to Kieran obviously we don’t, but we can adapt."

Odegaard boost

In terms of what Arsenal's transfer missions are regarding new arrivals this month, technical director Edu has already identified what is the main priority.

"It's quite clear what we need," Edu said at an Arsenal fans' forum last month. "We need a player with creativity in the middle, we don’t have that in the squad right now."

And the Brazilian might have been handed a massive boost in his creative midfielder search.

According to Sport, a loan deal for Real Madrid's Martin Odegaard is 'close'.

If Arsenal are successful in signing Odegaard before deadline day, they will have two players on loan from Real Madrid - with the other being Dani Ceballos.

A scenario that could not have happened if it was a fellow Premier League club, as per the rules.
