Edu tasked with £45m January transfer mission for Kylian Mbappe alternative to fix Arsenal saga

The January transfer window floodgates have opened and, while it seems as if Mikel Arteta's strike force is about to be swept away by the strong tide, Arsenal are reportedly in the market for a new forward.

Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah see their current deals expire at the end of the season, meanwhile Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's future, naturally, remains uncertain having been stripped of his captaincy.

A lot of sides would shift into a state of emergency if they were to see their prospects wither away as a striker crisis would, but the professionalism of Lacazette extinguished the Gunners' inferno, plugging the crisis at hand.

Leading by example, the Frenchman has guided the north London side to the light at end of the tunnel but Lacazette's efforts have reminded Edu what he must look for when signing a new striker.

Tom Canton spoke to French football writer Jeremy Smith live on The Arsenal Way 'Transfer Insight' show to delve into how David could emulate, and exceed, the success of Lacazette at the Emirates, should Edu pursue the Canadian international.

Jeremy kickstarted proceedings by explaining how, despite not being initially considered an out and out finisher, David has transformed into a goal-scoring machine.

"When David joined at the start of last season, there was a lot of criticism in the first dozen or so matches because he wasn't putting the ball in the net," he said.

"Even then, it was a little bit harsh because he's not an out and out goalscorer. As it turns out, his record in 2021 was eleven goals and he's already got twelve goals this season - he's top scorer ahead of the likes of Mbappe, which is obviously impressive stuff."

Jeremy added by detailing how David, who is valued at £45 million by Transfermarkt, has more to his game than the stereotype of a second striker who needs a backboard in front to bounce passes off of, often likened to Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud's famous partnership at the 2018 World Cup.

"He knows how to find the back of the net but, for me, he's still very much a second striker, a deeper-lying striker," he said.

"Lille often play in a four-four-two and he'll be slightly behind someone like Yilmaz. Not necessarily an all-action player like a Griezmann who in the France team would play off Giroud but certainly more skilful than just an out and out finisher. He has a lot more to his game than just that."
