Edu finally wins £27m Arsenal transfer battle following Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa announcement

Emiliano Martinez has had a torrid time at Aston Villa this season after having an excellent summer with Argentina where he lifted the Copa America.

Despite the influx of new signings at Villa which saw the club spend £89m, they currently sit just two points above the relegation zone and that has led to the sacking of manager Dean Smith.

Martinez has conceded the third most goals in the league and his mistakes has played a part on the club’s downfall this season.

His poor performances highlight the successful sale by Edu and it is a problem Steven Gerrard will have to address if appointed as Villa’s new manager.

Arsenal fans were outraged when Edu decided to sell the Argentine after his heroics towards the backend of the 2019/2020 season which saw the Gunners lift the FA Cup.

This was met with further resentment when supporters were bemused by the signing of Aaron Ramsdale after his £30m price tag seemed ludicrous at the time.

However, Arsenal have pulled of a masterstroke because alongside being voted the Gunners’ player of the month for October. Ramsdale has prevented Arteta from potentially getting sacked, which Martinez failed to do with Smith.

Ramsdale came into the side after the September international break and since then the Gunners have gone eight games unbeaten in the Premier League and have kept five clean sheets in the process.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper has had a major part to play in Arsenal’s change of form and it is not just his shot-stopping that is a factor in that, as the defence has also looked much more solid overall.

He has quickly become a fan favourite at the club and the disarray surrounding the Martinez sale has quickly vanished, due to the success of the Englishman.

Aston Villa currently sit in 16 th place, whilst Arsenal are just two points away from second place, which at the start of the season nobody would’ve predicted these positions for both sides.

The goalkeeping situations have a major part to play for the form of both teams and it is clear that Arsenal are the more beneficiary.

Arteta has one less problem to worry about than Gerrard due to the success of Ramsdale.
