Edu could pull off transfer masterstroke as Arsenal have Lucas Torreira trick up their sleeve

Newly-appointed Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri is reportedly interested in signing Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira this summer.

According to Sky Sports Italia, via the Mirror, the Serie A outfit hold a keen interest in the Uruguay midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid.

That could be good news for Gunners fans, with their club having a strong interest in Lazio forward Joaquin Correa, according to La Repubblica.

The same news outlet claims that Sarri 's side value Correa at around £25million this summer - with the 26-year-old Argentine still having three years remaining on his contract at the Stadio Olimpico.

Football Italia are reporting that the Gunners could use Torreira in a swap deal for Correa to try and drive the asking price down, as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his attacking options.

Formal negotiations between Lazio and Arsenal are "yet to begin", it is claimed, but the Italian outfit have "sounded out" Torreira over a possible return to Italy.

Back in October last year, Torreira's father and agent, Ricardo, explained how Arteta's role led to his son leaving the Gunners on a loan deal.

"Lucas has a huge heart and puts a lot of effort into everything he does," he told Libertad Digital.

"That’s why he’s not one of the players who likes to be on the bench waiting for minutes.

"He needs to show what he can give on the pitch. He’s encouraged with the game. And that happened at Arsenal.

"Lucas is honest and wants to leave his soul on the pitch, but that is defined by the coaches and for the current Arsenal manager he didn’t count.

"Lucas wasn’t on the bench because he wanted to be there, but by decision of his coach.

"For a 24-year-old boy, recognised in Uruguay and around the world, the most necessary thing is to play.

"Arsenal decided that he wouldn’t have minutes, but we promise, God willing, if everything goes well and if there’s a coach at Arsenal who loves him when his contract with Atlético ends, he’ll leave his soul there again if they want him."

Torreira featured just 27 times for Atletico in all competitions during his season-long loan spell in the Spanish capital.
